Crate training is one of the most valuable gifts you can give your new puppy. When done correctly, the crate becomes their personal "den"—a safe, quiet space they can retreat to when overwhelmed.
Step 1: Introduction
Never shove a puppy into a crate and lock the door. Start by leaving the door wide open and placing high-value treats or their food bowl right at the entrance. Let them explore it on their own terms.
Step 2: Closing the Door
Once they are comfortably eating meals inside, try gently tossing a treat in, letting them enter, and closing the door for just five seconds while talking to them calmly. Open it before they have a chance to whine.
Step 3: Extending the Time
Gradually increase the time the door is closed. The key is to always let them out when they are quiet and settled, never when they are barking or scratching at the door, as this teaches them that crying equals freedom.
