How to Brush Your Pet's Teeth (Without Getting Scratched)

Dental care is the most overlooked aspect of pet wellness. Periodontal disease doesn't just cause bad breath; the bacteria in the mouth can travel through the bloodstream, affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Start with Pet-Safe Toothpaste

Never use human toothpaste, which contains fluoride and artificial sweeteners (like xylitol) that are highly toxic to pets. Purchase an enzymatic pet toothpaste—they often come in flavors like poultry or malt.

The Gradual Introduction

Don't just jam a brush into their mouth on day one. Start by letting them lick the toothpaste off your finger. After a few days, gently rub your toothpaste-coated finger along their gums. Finally, introduce a small finger-brush or a pet-specific toothbrush.

Consistency is key. Aim for 3-4 times a week to significantly reduce tartar buildup and prolong the time between professional veterinary cleanings.
