Bringing a kitten home is thrilling, but for the kitten, it's a massive and often terrifying transition. They have just been taken away from everything they know.
The Safe Room
Do not give a new kitten full access to your house immediately. Set up a "safe room" (like a bathroom, guest room, or large closet) containing everything they need: a litter box, food, water, a cozy bed, and safe toys.
Decompression Time
Sit in the safe room quietly with a book or your phone. Let the kitten approach you. Do not force them out from under the bed or couch. Offer a wand toy or a high-value treat to build trust slowly.
Opening Up the House
Once the kitten is confidently eating, using the litter box, and seeking out your affection in the safe room (usually after 2-5 days), you can begin leaving the door cracked open so they can explore the rest of the house at their own pace.
