Dogs communicate highly effectively through their body language. While we all recognize a wagging tail, true canine happiness is expressed through a variety of subtle and not-so-subtle cues.
1. The "Soft" Face
A relaxed dog has a soft gaze and relaxed ears. Their mouth might be slightly open in what looks like a gentle smile. Tension in the face, hard staring, or tightly pulled-back lips are indicators of stress, not happiness.
2. Loose, Wiggling Body
When a dog is genuinely happy, their whole body gets involved. A stiff wagging tail can actually indicate agitation, but a loose, sweeping wag that wiggles the dog's hips is a clear sign of joy.
3. Play Bows
Dropping their front elbows to the ground while keeping their rear end in the air is the universal dog sign for "Let's play!" It indicates a relaxed, happy state and a desire for social interaction.
4. Healthy Appetite
Changes in eating habits are often the first sign of stress or illness. A happy, healthy dog generally looks forward to meal times and eats their food enthusiastically.
5. Choosing to Be Near You
While dogs need their independence, a happy dog values your company and will often choose to sleep in the same room as you or lean against you when resting.
